We all know the police do a great service to the public and keep them safe, but there are some things that we really don’t need law enforcement for.
Like a third grade party at an elementary school.
Brownies were served at this end-of-school party in Collingswood, New Jersey, and apparently a student said something about them that was wrongly interpreted by another student as a racist remark.
Despite this being something easily solved internally, school staff decided to call the Collingswood Police Department.
You’re probably thinking, it’s not like the police will respond to such a silly call and take it seriously.
But that’s exactly what they did, and before everyone knew it, a cop was sternly asking the third-grader what he had said, and the boy was alone with no one to speak up for him.
But that’s not where this too-far response ended.
The kid’s father was called up by the police, and then the situation was referred to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
The boy’s mother, Stacy dos Santos, was furious with the overreaction as her son hadn’t even done anything wrong and it had been a misunderstanding.
The resulting trauma due to this incident has caused her to make a decision to enroll him in a different school next year.
This entirely unnecessary response from the police is, sadly, not the first of its kind.
June 2016 records show that the police responded to up to five calls per day at schools in this small district with less than 2,000 students.
Needless to say, parents everywhere are quite angry.
