Despite his progressive politics, President Joe Biden has a family history that he would rather Americans not know about. While he proudly talks about his Irish Catholic roots, Biden also has another side of his family that proudly owned slaves prior to the Civil War. According to a Politico story, Biden’s great-great-great-grandfather, Jesse Robinett, was a slaveowner living in Maryland during the 1800s.
Jesse Robinett’s slave ownership was not kept secret – he even took part with other Marylanders in a survey of slave ownership in the state. President Biden has yet to comment on his family history, though it continues to reemerge as ripples from The Bidens book continue through national news media.
Biden’s full name, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., suggests that President Biden is tied to Jesse through his great-great-grandfather.
President Biden’s family history is now becoming more well known, and President Biden has yet to deny these claims publicly. The president’s family history has the potential to anger Trump and his supporters, and Trump will likely use this information in future speeches. President Biden is known for being a quiet man that prefers not to stir up controversy or speak negatively of others – which may be why he hasn’t commented on these new claims about him just yet.
According to the report, Biden’s ancestor owned a slave in Maryland – a fourteen-year-old boy. Alexander Bannerman, a West Virginia genealogist, discovered Biden’s connection to America’s history of slavery.
Biden has spoken about Delaware as a “slave state,” which it was during the Civil War. Delaware sided with the Union against the Confederacy but still wanted to maintain its power over enslaved Blacks.
“My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state is the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a northeast, liberal state,” he said in an interview from 2006.
Biden has chosen to focus on his Irish roots rather than his slave owner ancestors.
“He kind of embodies the American common man,” Meagher said. “And Irish Americans have been an important manifestation of that image from the beginning of the republic.”
What do you think about Biden’s slave-owning ancestors? Should the president address this past directly in a speech to the American people?
