In November 2015, Ruth and Jonathan Scully of Leonardtown, Maryland, received news that nearly every parent would fear. Nolan, their four-year-old son, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer impacting the body’s soft tissues.
Doctors informed the boy’s parents that he needed to begin a rigorous treatment regimen to combat the disease. This regimen would consist of 43 weeks of arduous chemotherapy sessions and five and a half weeks of radiotherapy.
