E-Town celebrates 30 years in Boulder

World famous radio shows from Boulder are also being inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

BOULDER, Colo. – An old church near downtown Boulder is home to a national radio show that will be recognized in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame this week.

Thirty years ago, Eatown started. It was the dream of Nick and Helen Forster, who recognized the power of music in bringing people together.

Over the past three decades, the show that has been featured on 300 radio stations has included hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians. From Pope Staples to James Taylor, Michael Fronty, Lyall Lovett, Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, Greenski Bluegrass, takeover salmon, Los Lobos and more for everyone.

He has big names, up-and-coming artists, non-musical guests and world-renowned anthropologists. If Jane Goodall has been there, the former president is Jimmy Carter. All with one goal: to address challenges such as social injustice and environmental issues such as climate change.

“We have not changed the world completely,” Helen Forster said, “but we have given some people some food for thought”.

Nick Foster said that if nothing else, E-Town has drawn attention to issues such as climate change.

“When we started we talked about climate change, and people were inviting us to stop. ‘But these days there are very few people who don’t know about it,” he said. “They Can’t believe it, they can’t trust it, they can’t know about it in detail, but it’s normal now what it wasn’t 30 years ago. ”

For the first 20 years, E-Town performed shows at the Boulder Theater. But when the old church became available a few blocks away, Nick Forster said it was perfect. This includes not only the stage and audience area complete with church, but also a community hall.

The non-profit organization has state-of-the-art recording studios, production facilities and offices. It is entirely solar-powered, perhaps the only zero-carbon studio in the country. Nick Forster said that the old converted church gave recognition to the organization.

“E-town, this solar powered community center, media making machine in the middle of the city, it really makes E-town real,” he said. “And after 30 years is very good for Helen and me, we now know that Itanagar is going to be well ahead of us. Let something be done that will benefit our community for a long time to come.”

Because of COVID-19, a virtual show will celebrate the 30th anniversary on 22 April, performed by many musicians who have been featured for so many years.

Former US senator and environmental advocate Tim Wirth will also be there. During the program, E-Town will be inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. To see, see for more information eTown.org.
