Heather and David Lettow live in a rural area of Washington County, Wisconsin, in the town of Barton. Heather was pregnant with the couple’s third child. After giving birth twice, she thought she knew just what to expect when she went into labor.
But, as with baby Louis, a baby born in London last year, this baby had some different plans…
On Sunday, November 26 – two weeks ahead of her due date – Heather woke up with contractions. Around 4:00 a.m. she decided it was time to go to the hospital, but as her pain increased, the mother of two knew she wasn’t going to make it.
Heather explained how terrifying this realization was for her:
“I was in panic mode,” she said, “I was like, ‘This is not supposed to happen!’”
As Heather tried to leave the house, her body started “bearing down” and she quickly went back inside. She knew the baby was about to come whether she was ready or not!
David is a farmer and typically delivers one to two calves a week, but nothing could prepare him for bringing his child into the world. Panicked, he called 911, and the quick and exciting ordeal could be heard over the line as he talked to the operator.
“She was in the kitchen standing with mom helping her and the head was already out,” David said.
“She came out in two pushes,” Heather added, “and here she was ready to rock our world.”
“It was a cool experience,” David said of the moment his daughter, Hope, entered the world.
I’m certain Heather was relieved when, not ten minutes later, emergency responders arrived. They allowed the ecstatic father to cut the umbilical cord.
The couple is thankful to everyone who helped them bring precious Hope into the world.
“We had a lot of EMT people respond, thank you to all of them,” said David.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office congratulated the Lettow’s on their precious new arrival.
“The Washington County Sheriff’s Office would like to congratulate the proud parents of a new baby girl born Sunday, November 26th at 4:43 a.m. weighing a healthy 7lbs 14 oz. And 20 inches long,” the wrote in a Facebook post.
“This was far from a normal delivery. The baby girl was born at the couple’s home as the father was on a 911 call with our communications center requesting medical assistance.”
Heather and baby Hope were taken to the hospital for a checkup, and thankfully mother and baby are doing fine.
Hope’s arrival was definitely an unexpected surprise, but it was also a welcome one. We wish all the best for this happy family!
