Off-duty police sergeant uses tourniquet to save injured motorcyclist’s life, police say

KENT COUNTY, MI – An off-duty Wyoming police sergeant likely saved a motorcyclist’s life by applying a tourniquet to a badly injured leg after a crash.

The motorcyclist and a passenger were hospitalized after the crash Tuesday, Oct. 20, on 28th Street SW east of Byron Center Avenue.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. when the eastbound motorcycle was struck by a car leaving a parking lot on the south side of the street. The driver did not see the motorcycle, police said.

Sgt. Chris DeBoer, who was on his way to work, witnessed the crash. He rushed to injured rider with a tourniquet and applied it to the victim’s leg.

“Sgt. DeBoer’s quick actions likely saved the operator’s life,” Lt. Eric Wiler said in a statement.

The motorcyclist, who suffered a “severely wounded” leg, was taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
