As thousands of migrants descend on the southern border, the Biden administration has issued a call for volunteers to help. The Customs and Border Protection agency is overwhelmed by the sheer number of people seeking a better life in America now that Joe Biden is president. As of Thursday, an estimated 16,000 unaccompanied minors were being held by federal caretakers while workers figure out how to reunite them with their loved ones and those who can take care of them.
Border facilities have been overwhelmed by the surge of migrants seeking to start a life in the United States now the Joe Biden is the president. However, the surge of undocumented people means that facilities used to house these individuals have become overrun and can no longer cope with the sheer number of people seeking to cross the border into the country.
The Office of Personnel Management wants other federal agencies to volunteer their workers to help with the border crisis. According to a spokesperson with the OPM, these volunteers could make a big difference and really help the struggling CBP agents.
The CBP is not the only agency struggling right now. The Office of Refugee Resettlement is currently working to help deal with the surge of unaccompanied minors at the border. The ORR is an agency within the Health and Human Services Department. In an effort to help cope with the unprecedented number of migrants attempting to cross the border, they are at work building facilities across the southern border, including places like Dallas, San Diego, San Antonio, and Fort Bliss, an Army base near El Paso.
“ORR provides a continuum of care for children, including placements in ORR foster care, shelter, and residential care providers that provide temporary housing and other services to unaccompanied children in ORR custody,” Kathleen McGettigan, acting director of OPM, told Fox News. “ORR and its care providers work to ensure that children are released timely and safely from ORR custody to parents, other family members, or other adults … who can care for the child’s physical and mental well-being.”
While the press does not have access to border facilities, Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar did gain access and shared images of the facilities.
“Out of the 5,000 plus they have at the Rio Grande, over 65 percent are unaccompanied kids,” Cuellar said during an interview.
What do you think about the call for volunteers to help at the border? What do you think Biden should do?
