The Duggar family was devastated on Sunday after their matriarch, 78-year-old Mary Duggar, suddenly passed away.
The Duggars, best known for starring in TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” and “Counting on,” confirmed the news earlier this week but did not say what caused the sudden loss.
Jill Duggar, 28, wrote on her Instagram:
My heart breaks. My grandma died suddenly today! She was an amazing woman of God and such a great example to so many! Grandma, you are greatly missed by all who knew you!
Now, the Washington County Coroner has revealed that the grandmother of 21 died from drowning, USA Today reports.
Mary reportedly passed away after a pool accident, Coroner Roger Morris told the outlet:
“It appears she slipped and fell into the pool.”
In a recording of the 911 call obtained by Radar Online, the dispatcher said:
“Call came in of a possible drowning at [address redacted]..that’s [address redacted]. Big house in the back…older woman, 14 echo — unconscious. Medics are responding.”
On Sunday, the Duggar family released a statement on Facebook regarding the heartbreaking loss. They wrote, in part:
She is survived by her daughter Deanna and her son Jim Bob, 21 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, with several more great-grandchildren on the way! … We deeply appreciate your prayers for our family and all who loved Mary during this time.

The Tontitown Police Department has started an investigation into the alleged accident. Autopsy results will be released once the investigation is over, the coroner confirmed.
The Duggar family have not spoken out publicly regarding the grandmother’s cause of death.
