There are unlikely heroes in the world — and they’re not always human. Dogs have been known to protect their owners in ways that seem almost unimaginable, and this instance, where a brave pit bull pulled a baby from a fire, is truly inspiring. Sasha the pit bull was able to save her owner’s 7-month-old daughter, Masailah from a fiery blaze, dragging the child from her bed to safety.
Sasha and Masailah have a close relationship, with the two being born just days apart. Their bond is undeniable, as they spend a lot of time together, including sharing a bed and taking baths together.
Sasha discovered the fire that broke out in the backyard of the family’s apartment building in California. Masailah’s mom, Latana Chai, heard the commotion and woke up as Sasha was heard throwing her body against the back door and barking.
Latana opened the door and discovered what all the barking was about, as Sasha came into the home. She recalled: “At that moment I opened the back door and Sasha ran into our home, straight into our bedroom.”
She explained: “I looked up and there’s black smoke coming from my neighbor’s house. You can see the flames coming out.”
The fire was spreading to their home, so Latana rushed inside to get her daughter – only to discover that Sasha had already gotten to her.
Latana noted: “I ran into the room and I see Sasha. She has my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety.”
Latana had just enough time to get Masailah, her phone, and the dog and leave their home before the flames took over.
The fire destroyed the apartment as well as the neighbor’s home, but firefighters were able to finally extinguish it. Latana and her family are staying with relatives and a fundraising page has been set up to help them out.
Latana said of Sasha: “I owe her everything. If it wasn’t for her, I would have still been in bed and things could have taken a worse turn.”
Among the many comments that people left on social media about the story were those who were happy to hear of a pit bull getting some praise. One person noted: “People forget these dogs were originally used as ‘nanny dogs’ they’re extremely sweet and amazing with kids, it was humans that used them for fighting and gave them a bad reputation. I have two and I trust them 100% with my kids.”
Another person agreed, writing: “Finally a positive story on a pit bull. They get such a bad rap due to crappy owners.”
Still another commenter shared: “Yes, a good story about a pit bull! So happy to see someone sharing a good story, there’s plenty of them but everyone focuses on the bad!”
One person shared the value of dogs, writing: “for the most part dogs are very smart (quick thinkers), hell of a lot more than some give them credit for. They are very loyal. This dog is definitely a true hero. Thank god that family got out… She saved her family, KNEW TO/HOW TO save the baby. She prevented a tragedy. Once again dogs ARE family.”
