As President Trump leaves the White House, the United States of America prepares to welcome a new administration. But the millions of Americans who voted for Biden are not the only ones excited for his presidency. As many as 8,000 South American migrants are traveling hundreds of miles through Central America toward the United States border with the hope that Biden will follow through on his promise to help eleven million legal immigrants walk an eight-year path to citizenship.
President Trump built his initial campaign on anti-immigration. When he first joined the race for the presidency, he did so by declaring Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers. He vowed to build a great wall that would span the length of the southern border of the United States of America and Mexico. Although he only put up some fencing during his four years as president, he did help push through anti-immigration policies.
Biden has vowed to work to roll back Trump’s anti-immigration policies that have made it difficult for brown people to legally come into the United States. Biden hopes to create a path to citizenship for some eleven million people, some of whom may be living in the United States illegally. The people who already gained protection under President Obama’s DACA program would be among the first to get citizenship under Biden’s new plan.
The migrant, who was from Honduras, did not provide his name but spoke to a CNN reporter while wearing a high-quality face mask. He told the reporter that he was fleeing a “bad situation” and only sought out respite in America for asylum. His situation has gotten worse because of the coronavirus pandemic as well as natural disasters like hurricanes. Also, the migrant said the president of Honduras has failed to help people in need.
“He’s gonna help all of us,” the migrant said, speaking of Joe Biden. “He’s giving us 100 days to get to the US’ to get legal status and ‘get a better life for our kids and family.”
“We’ve got a president who’s not helping the population, and we’re in a bad, bad situation,” he said, referring to Juan Orlando Hernández.
Biden has promised a sweeping immigration bill on his first day as president. He hopes that this promise will create a path to citizenship for some eleven million people who want to contribute to the greatest country on Earth.
