A transgender woman who was being held as an inmate in New York City’s Rikers Island prison has been accused of raping another female inmate during their internment. The transgender inmate, who has a history of violent offenses, is believed to have raped another woman after the pair finished their shower in the women’s section of the prison facility – mirroring the rise in violent crimes that have continued to plague New York City and other large metropolitan areas across the United States since the pandemic struck America under the leadership of former President Donald Trump.

According to details of the Rikers Island attack, the victim had just finished showering when Blount attacked her from behind. Law enforcement explained that Blount held down the victim and raped her on February day, 2021. The attack occurred at the Rose M. Singer Center at Rikers Island prison off the coast of Manhattan.
The victim did the right thing and reported the attack to jail officials. They conducted a rape kit and confirmed that Blount’s DNA was identified by her profile in the New York State Registry.
“Sexual violence against anyone is unacceptable,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said in a statement.
It is believed that Blount was being held in the women’s section of the prison because she identifies as a transgender woman. Despite this fact, authorities have not explained why she was held in the women’s section other than the fact that she identifies as a woman.
Blount has had trouble with the law in the past. Back in 2012, she was arrested following an assault outside of a gay bar in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.
New York City wants to start fixing the troubled prison complex, which houses about five thousand inmates.
Mayor Eric Adams told New Yorkers to be patient while he works on improving the prison.
“Give me a chance. We have witnessed how others have failed. Now give me a chance. Let’s work together,” he said in part.
