What is Arcturus and what are the symptoms of the new Covid-19 sub-variant

An increase in Covid-19 cases has been seen in India, which has been attributed to the Arcturus sub-variant.

The Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 strain, which is also present in more than 20 countries, is under observation, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

What is known about XBB.1.16 is as follows.

Describe Arcturus.

The new sub-variant, abbreviated XBB.1.16, is known as Arcturus.

It is a recombinant variety derived from BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75, two offspring of another Omicron variant BA.2. It was originally discovered in late January.

According to the WHO, the sub-variant features a second mutation in the spike protein, which has been shown to boost pathogenicity and infectivity in laboratory investigations.

According to research from the University of Tokyo, Arcturus is around 1.2 times more contagious than XBB.1.5. According to British news site iNews, the sub-variant is not believed to be any more severe than XBB.1.5.

What are the new sub-symptoms? variant’s
One or two days of steadily rising fever, headaches, body pains, gastrointestinal discomfort, and sore throat are a few symptoms that have been noted.

Several people who have the sub-variant of the infection are also complaining of conjunctivitis and watery eyes.

Which nations are home to the sub-variant?

In late January, the subvariant was first discovered. Nowadays, it may be found in more than 20 nations, including Singapore, the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.

In the last week of March, 28,410 Covid-19 instances were reported in Singapore. This virtually doubles the 14,467 number from the prior week. How many of these instances are caused by the new sub-variant is unknown.

According to the Ministry of Health, a combination of XBB sub-variants, including XBB.1.5, XBB.1.9, and XBB.1.16, are responsible for the current Covid-19 infection wave. It did add, however, that there isn’t any proof at the moment that the instances are becoming worse.

What’s going on in India?

The number of Covid-19 cases in India as of Wednesday was 40,215 — an increase of 3,122 instances in a single day, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As cases in India rose to their highest weekly number in seven months as a result of the latest wave, at least two states decided to reinstate mask-wearing in public settings, according to The Telegraph on Wednesday.

In public spaces and educational institutions, face masks are required in the northern state of Haryana. Pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with chronic illnesses must wear masks in Kerala, a famous tourist destination in the southern state.
